Surfing the Spectrum: Ocean Heroes' new digital presence
Ocean Heroes is a Western Australian based non-for-profit that seeks to benefit those on the autism spectrum through surfing, within a highly supportive and structured environment.
Dapth developed Ocean Heroes' new website completely pro-bono, to enable them to better present what they do for the community, and enhance their ability to raise funds through eCommerce leveraging Umbraco and Vendr.
“Learning to surf offers a fun, healthy and unique way for people on the autism spectrum to develop their confidence, boost self-esteem and make connections with others.”

Empowering access
Inclusive Design
for Neurodiverse Users
Neurodiverse individuals and those on the Autism spectrum require a more nuanced colour palette as part of their user experience (UX). Research supports the use of pale and grey focused colour schemes in these contexts, low arousal colour schemes and minimal use of pattern/s, and avoidance of pure black or overly saturated hues (there should be some greyness within black, for example).
With the establishment of master design layout, we then proceeded in designing and producing the resolution of the website’s pages., with individual visualisations alongside their prototyping for both desktops and mobile environments. Research also suggests high preference towards rounded and/or illustrative font emphasising the roundness of each letter form. The open dyslexic font appears to be widely used as a benchmark for neurodiverse people, in terms of visual accessibility conventions, and was used throughout the Ocean Heroes website for this reason. A clear open type font was both accessible and easy to read.
Using Umbraco’s features, we were able to deliver this project to promote the invaluable service that Ocean Heroes provides to the Autism community. With branded merch available through the website, it features a strong e-commerce offering, where users can order and add merch (and donations) to their carts. Fillable forms are used throughout the site to ensure a seamless contact process. The website also features an e-commerce function with branded merchandise available, and fillable forms to streamline communication between Ocean Heroes and users. The site showcases team hero cards with key information on staff and volunteers, as well as a dedicated design presentation section.
To enhance their fundraising efforts and better showcase their mission to the community, Dapth created a new website for Ocean Heroes, built in Umbraco, that is both inclusive and accessible for neurodiverse users. Through extensive research, Dapth established an appropriate colour palette and typography, and incorporated open dyslexic font for ease of reading and use.
