Why do you even need a user interface designer?

Atoms, molecules, quarks. Getting all the little interface puzzle pieces right creates a sustainable digital product.

Collaborating closely with their fellow digital designers, a user interface designer is an elemental guru. They look to assess and build upon the little features, gimmicks and interactions that enable the overall design to be created. Without careful thought through how toggles work, what hover states do, and how a user moves from one action to the next, UX designers and developers have a much more difficult task ahead when attempting to create your digital product.

A user interface designer defines how the point of human-computer interaction takes place across any device. The increase in reliance on digital (web-based applications and mobile applications) has pointed modernising companies to notice and respect user interface design as a core component in their digital product development, aspiring to improve and maximise their user’s experience.

“Achieving the compositional integrity of any digital product relies on the methodical process and nurturing needed to define the user interface framework, which is essential to give adequate guidance for designers and developers to work from.”

Looking for a user interface designer?

We live in a digital world, or as we call it a ‘digital first world,’ meaning engagement between two parties happens through digital before it happens in person (if ever in person at all). There are stats about the high proportion of a human day spent on phones or browsers. Some call it concerningly high, we call it plain fascinating and informing.

With our increasing co-dependency on the internet, web apps and mobile apps, the best way to compete (or survive) is to prioritise understanding how users engage with your business and optimise every building block so everyone wins.  An attractive, engaging, and efficient user interface (UI) gives way to a potent user experience (UX).

User interface design (UI) is formed from layers of interaction points that light up the human senses (being seen with the eye, felt with the hand, or heard by the ear). It covers a wide breadth of consumer input devices such as keys on a keyboard, the click of a mouse, movement on a trackpad, and the swiping of a touch screen.

The key focus for a UI designer is to manage the way in which a user and their devices interact with the digital experience you are providing via your digital product (custom software app, mobile app, website or intranet). The design process is not a single endeavour, but works hand in hand with a user experience designer. It looks to define the appearance of a digital product, look, feel, response time, and type of outcome.

Sometimes referred to as expanding your brand’s digital identity, the user interface designer guides developers in the way they present you digitally.

A classic user interface is literally the contact point where a human user meets you (via a website or application) via a device (mobile or computer).

The objective for UI design is to enable the user's experience to be easy and intuitive, aligning to how they would expect your digital product to operate and respond.

User interface design (UI) considers the ways in which the identified user moves in a defined journey (from A to B). These are the molecules used by the user to achieve their goal, such as buttons, toggles, and swipe conventions.

User experience design (UX) is about the experience of the user centred around how they feel, their level of satisfaction or frustration, and a review of the entire interaction with your digital platform.

Often the forgotten role or component in digital projects, user interface is essential as it supports meeting user expectations for your website or tool.

User interface facilitates the interaction between a user and your digital product through elements such as buttons, animated cues, contrasting visuals, and responsive design. The UI are all the puzzle pieces defined for a UX designer to place into a wireframe.

A result of care taken to define the UI will anticipate the user’s interaction and increase conversion rates, lower bounce rates, and increase consumption of your digital product.
