Working at the Zoo typically means being away from your desk. However, mobile phones always move with staff.
Perth Zoo is a top tourist attraction in Western Australia. To further lead the way in care for humans and animals - monitoring occupational health and safety was essential. We developed a handy mobile app to provide timely reporting so that issues were logged the moment they happened.
Staff typically are not sitting at their desk when working (for obvious reasons), so it was imperative that team members had the ability to report events the moment they happened. We developed a custom OSH (Occupational Safety & Health) business application that efficiently collected data, and centralised information for easy reporting.
The new business application that would provide a user with forms to capture OSH event data and support workflow through the organisation that leveraged Active Directory integration. To create a streamlined process and leverage the app to its full potential, a key requirement was for the solution to integrate with an Excel reporting feature to produce a monthly automatic email report.
This custom application development project wasn't the only time we ended up working with the fluffy animals (and staff) over at Perth Zoo. We've worked with the Zoo for many years, helping them navigate their 5 year digital transformation plan.
“It is critical to any business to embrace digital applications to improve their business service offering.”
We took the humble excel report to a new level.
We couldn't help with feeding the animals or cleaning the enclosures, but we could help with the powerful integration and development required. We created the Perth Zoo OSH business application to allow staff cloud-based access, login and reporting of OSH hazards and incidents. The mobile solution supported Perth Zoo managers to easily identify and report on the incidents, outcomes, and resolutions that had taken place.
Umbraco, a C# developed open source tool, was chosen as the base CMS for this system. Umbraco permits the website administrators a quick way to update the content of the OSH system and allows reuse of the Forms module of Umbraco for the input method of the OSH reports.
Business applications should be uncomplicated.
The Perth Zoo OSH application allows forms, once created, to enter the Perth Zoo workflow process and notifies managers of any OSH events automatically within the Zoo. This means managers are aware of issues as soon as possible and are prompted to enter information into the OSH report fields that are assigned to them. The form data is then saved and can be used later for reporting or investigation. The solution enhances Perth Zoo's ability to offer high safety and compliance across their organisation. It didn’t need to be more complicated than that – so we didn’t over engineer it any more than that.
Are you looking for a team to not over-engineer your next digital project?
Enough about us.
